Chemical peels have been used by dermatologists for decades to treat skin complaints, but advances have resulted in rapid expansion of new and refined techniques. Chemical peels are most commonly performed for cosmetic reasons and have become a popular non-surgical treatment to help correct a variety of problems such as uneven colouration, blemishes, acne scarring, and to reduce the effects of smoking and sun damage. They can be used on the face, chest, or backs of the hands. The depth of peels vary and can be adapted to the patient’s individual needs.
A chemical peel is when a chemical solution is applied to the surface of the skin to remove - or peel away - dead skin cells and promote new cell growth. Once the outer layers of skin are removed, new layers begin to form in their place resulting in an improved, ‘fresher’ appearance. The new, regenerated skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin.
In general, deeper peels result in more significant and longer-lasting skin rejuvenation, but the risks and recovery time are also greater.
